We would also like to thank those guests that have graciously donated to the family of Peter Meena. Thank you so much for your generosity! If there is anyone else that would still like to donate, please contact us by June 1st as we will be forwarding the donations to Tanzania at that time. Asante Sana!

We are saddened to report the death of Peter Meena – one of our most beloved safari guides. Peter passed away in his sleep Sunday morning, April 26th 2015. He was laid to rest on Friday, 1st May 2015 at his home town – Usa River. Peter had just turned 51 and leaves behind his wife Sumayi and four daughters (Doreen – age 23, Kareen – age 5, Elen – age 3, and Precious – age 1)

Many of our guests over the last twenty years had the privilege of having Peter as their safari guide. I think we all fell in love with not only his amazing skills as a guide but also his genuine kindness towards others and his infectious sense of humor. His bright smile will surely be missed by many. We would love to hear from those who knew Peter in the comments section below.

If you would like to make a donation to Peter’s family, please contact Michael Wishner at mike@africadreamsafaris.com. We are organizing a donation to help out Peter’s family.

Please keep Peter’s family and children in your prayers…

  1. I will always remember you my brother, friend, core worker, leader, example, team player and superstar. I will miss you and Jehovah bless your family.

  2. Peter was our guide in 2007 and what a blessing. He was really the highlight of our journey because we learned so much from him and got to see the Serengeti and all it’s beauty through his eyes. We have shared his words of wisdom with friends and family many times since then. Shocked and deeply saddened by his sudden death we are praying for his family that he loved so much.

  3. Peter (Petro) was our guide on two of our safaris. We are shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of Petro. Besides being a fabulous guide, mostly we remember how he was always smiling and laughing, and also his deep love for his family. He was such a proud father. It is so sad to think of his wife and girls without him. The entire ADS family has lost a good man.

  4. My family and I had the most wonderful safari several years ago. Peter was our guide and he was undoubtedly the main reason we had such an incredible experience. Our children absolutely adored him and we all enjoyed his colorful stories. We talk about him often to this day.

  5. Even though Peter was not our guide, we had the most wonderful experience to enjoy his company, along with his guests, for two evening dinners at our camp. Peter and our guide, Raphal, knew each other and we had so much fun. Even though we only knew him for a short/limited time, I am deeply saddened; he will be greatly missed.

  6. Petro was our guide this past July. We were all crazy about him! He seemed get our Oklahoma humor. We are heartbroken for his wife, children and all of his friendsI I was lucky enough to visit with his wife for a short time on our trip via telephone. Petro was so very proud of her and his children. I want them to know how he gushed when he spoke of them. We could feel his love! He was an amazing guide and we left Tanzania knowing that he was also a friend!

  7. I will always remember you my brother Petro. It was always great working with you on the bush and your team working spirit will be missed. Rest in peace Peter

  8. My daughter and I were so saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. It was exactly one year ago today that we got off our plane in the Serengeti and met our amazing guide Peter.

We were truly amazed by his knowledge of just about everything on our safari, his quick wit and beautiful laugh. He was our very own Dr. Doolittle talking and mimicking with a vervet monkey in the Central Serengeti and singing with a bird in the Ngorogoro Crater while we sat in the truck for over an hour waiting for the one black rhino he spotted from about 150 yds away to stand up.

By the end of our trip, we felt like we had made a lifelong friend. We were so looking forward to introducing my husband and son to Peter on our next trip.

We would love to send a contribution to his family, so please let me know how we could accomplish this.

Our condolences to you and the rest of the ADS family as I know Peter was a valued and loved member of your team.

Lala salaam dear Peter. We will forever remember our time with you.

    Lynn

  9. Petro was our guide for our 2009 safari. We teased that he knew everything about Tanzania and the Serengeti from politics to animal scat! We learned so much from him. In fact I don’t think there is a person I’ve learned more from. He was so wonderfully patient teaching us words in Swahili and listening to us sing Jambo Bwana over and over until we got it all right! Not a week has gone by since 2009 that we haven’t thought about Petro and the gifts of knowledge he gave us and the laughs we shared. His legacy will live on but we are so deeply saddenened that he is gone. Our sincerest condolences to his family and the ADS team all of whom must be reeling from his loss.

  10. We were so lucky to have Peter for our first wonderful safari that when we decided on a return trip, we asked for him again…never dreaming that could happen. Because the three of us had such a connection, the repeat trip was even more fantastic than the first. Peter was an amazing, intelligent, funny man. We grieve for his family and we are so saddened by this loss. A one of kind gentleman!

  11. Somehow I missed this terrible news of Peter’s death in May. So very sad. He was so young! He was our wonderful guide in 2006 and certainly one of the many highlights of our trip. I am glad we have the many memories of our time with him. So sad for his family. Asante Sana Peter for sharing yourself with so many people. You will be missed!
