A Dozen Elephants Visited Our Lodge Pool

Lynn, this trip was the most fabulous we’ve ever taken! I don’t think we can ever duplicate or match it for it beauty of Tanzania, its people and its animals. Our accommodations were outstanding…truly first rate. We were spoiled especially by the Crater Lodge staff! But each lodge was unique. We were thrilled when a dozen elephants visited the pond behind Bilila Lodge. Then, at Kusini Tented Camp, the camp director treated us to a short astronomy lesson of the stars and constellations in the beautiful night sky; no light pollution! What a marvelous view of the Milky Way.

Our safari guides were kind, courteous and so well informed…and so proud of their country! We felt very safe and comfortable with them and learned so much from them. The idea of our group using two vehicles turned out to be a very good suggestion…not just from the standpoint of having extra room for viewing the animals but because one vehicle could always return to the lodge early while the other could stay out longer for those of us who could not get enough of the animals and scenery. Every aspect of the trip was wonderful…and we’ve got lots of photos to remember it by.

Thanks for all your careful planning on our behalf. It was a dream come true for us.

Quote of the Week: Rich and Cathie Guimond

We hope that you like these photos and can use them in your updates. We had a fabulous time during our safari and everything went extremely well. We loved all of our accommodations. We hope to return in a few years with more members of our family. However, it will be hard to top the animal encounters that we observed this time.

This adventure was a celebration of our wedding anniversary. We topped it off by purchasing a very nice Tanzanite and diamond ring for Catherine at the Cultural Heritage shop as we drove back into Arusha. She is thrilled with the ring.

While we were there we saw many people with large groups. Six to eight in a vehicle and two to four vehicle caravans. We were very happy that we were on our private safari with ADS instead of being packed into those vehicles. We know some people that were on a group safari with Thompson in January. There were a total of eighteen in their group. The price for them in the large group was almost the same as our cost for the private safari. Although they enjoyed their safari it was not the same private and tailored experience that we had. Asanta sana!

Cheetahs at Gol Kopjes

The Gol Kopjes area is certainly not disappointing our safari guests! This green season with continued exceptional cheetah viewing. Though the green season has been on the dry side this year, just enough rain has fallen to provide enough fresh grass growth to keep the gazelles and thus the cheetahs on these eastern plains around Gol Kopjes. Sametu Kopjes, with it’s permanent waterhole, has been really great this year for lion activity. The large Sametu Lion Pride has seemingly been a permanent fixture around the waterhole for the last two months.

Special thanks to Kirk Palmer and family for sending in these great pictures of a successful cheetah stalk, chase and kill at the Gol Kopjes (note one of the kopjes at Gol in the background) on February 23rd. Click here to watch a video of the cheetah chase.

Exceptional Green Season Game Viewing

We want to thank Africa Dream Safaris for making our dream trip come true. After forty years of hoping he could return to Tanzania, this time to visit the Serengeti, my husband finally got his wish. The safari and all the arrangements promised by ADS transpired exactly as promised – no surprises except that the experience was more wonderful than we expected, and everything we could have dreamed of. From the first lodging in Arusha until saying goodbye to our guide at the airport, everything was perfect. I particularly appreciate the presence of several staff in Arusha, knowing were any problems to arise, we had the ability to get in touch with them at any time.

Within minutes of landing at the Seronera airstrip we were seeing cheetahs. Within a couple hours, we saw nearly every animal we hoped to see on the entire trip. Who would have imagined seeing dozens of lions, thousands and thousands of zebras, cheetahs and leopards every day. All thanks to the incredible eye of our guide, and the teamwork of all the ADS guides in the area. The guide’s insight into animal behavior, the Serengeti ecosystem, and frankly anything we could dream up to ask him, was incredible. We learned as much about East Africa, Tanzania, its people, politics and culture, as we did about the animals. He even helped my husband brush up on his Swahili! Francis’ company was most welcome, and the ADS’s high standards shows through in their selection of guides.

We were truly amazed at how close we were able to get to the animals. Herds of elephants surrounding our vehicle, lions lounging next to the wheel of the truck, a leopard sauntering across the road in front of us, all manner of predators stalking prey within yards of us. The lodges were all very comfortable, but our favorite was our last – Lemala Ngorongoro Camp. A very peaceful setting, with the most attentive service one could ever imagine. And the best popcorn I have ever eaten!! All the lodges provided a wonderful nights rest, good food and a chance to catch up with other ADS guests we came to know during our trip.

I can’t recommend Africa Dream Safaris highly enough and would not see the Serengeti any other way. Their responsiveness during the planning stage, the excellence of their guides, the quality of the accommodations before, during and after safari, the comfort of their vehicles, (three people in our 8-passenger vehicle, versus 6 people in 6-passenger vehicle with other companies) the ability to customize the experience from beginning to end and the support staff available on site all add up to the perfect trip. Thanks again, ADS.

Trip of a Lifetime

We’ve been back now for about three days from our safari and still can’t stop talking about it or waking up thinking about everything we saw.   Words simply can’t describe how amazing it was.   When people say a safari is a “trip of a lifetime,” I now know what they mean.  We saw animals and sights that I thought I would only ever see on Planet Earth or National Geographic.  Yet, there we were – parked within a few feet of lionesses noisily growling and feeding together – or next to baby elephants playfully charging each other.

Two things amazed me most on the safari – the volume of animals we saw and the close proximity we got to them.  On a ten-day safari we must have seen 20 cheetah, 50 or 60 lions, herds of 50 or more elephants, 5 leopards, several rhino, and countless giraffe, ostrich, zebras, warthogs, and wildebeest.  We also saw babies of everything, which we could have watched for hours.  One morning, we sat and watched two cheetah cubs jumping and playing for at least 30 minutes.  They would stalk one another through the bushes, leaping at each other and rolling in the dirt.  Once in a while the mom would get in on the action and run at them playfully.  We got very close to almost all of the animals. Looking into the deep, amber colored eyes of a lioness lounging next to our jeep was something I won’t forget.  Nor will I forget being within about 50 yards of a herd of 46 elephants who turned and all stared at us when we pulled up, circling around their babies – before relaxing and going back to eating and playing while we intently watched.

We chose to stay at tented camps, all of which were fantastic.  We loved to be able to hear the animals at night.   Our favorite accommodation by far was the private camping.  We pulled up to the campsite in Ndutu – beautiful green grass and acacia trees and two tents – set up just for us.  Having dinner and sitting under the campfire with drinks afterwards looking up at the stars while hyenas whooped and lions grunted in the distance was almost surreal.  Rama, the camp manager, was perfect in anticipating our every need and we had a great time talking with him each day.  We also very much enjoyed the Kusini and Ngorongoro Lemala Camps.  At Kusini one night while sitting at the campfire sipping wine and stargazing with the camp managers, we could hear two large prides of lions within a kilometer of each side of the camp roaring.  At Lemala, a hungry elephant hung out behind our tent all night eating from the nearby trees.  Absolutely incredible!

Finally – and most importantly – I wanted to comment on our guide.  His experience, expertise, and warm personality absolutely made our trip the amazing experience it was.  He had almost 20 years of experience in guiding and it certainly showed.  He knew in-depth information on every animal and bird we saw and made the drive and viewing more interesting and exciting because of it.  He also didn’t just drive and try and spot animals as it seemed like drivers from some other companies were doing – he was constantly working with other drivers to see what was out there each day and find the best areas and animals for us to view.  As a result, we got to see everything we wanted, and much more.

Thank you to Dawn and Africa Dream Safaris for an incredible trip that we will never forget. We hope to see you again soon – Dave and I are already thinking about a return trip in a few years for our anniversary!

Amazing Safari Pictures

Special thanks to Shane and Heidi for sharing their beautiful pictures from their honeymoon safari they conducted with Africa Dream Safaris. There are some excellent lodge and camp pictures in addition to all the great animal shots. Of course, we particularly liked the Private Camping shots. It’s nice to see our guests enjoying our special Bush Camping experience! See the link below to view Shane and Heidi’s pictures:

Our 20th Wedding Anniversary

We wanted to take a minute after we returned from our safari to thank you and the entire ADS Staff for their part in our safari experience. It is hard to know what expectations to have on a trip like this. We have travelled to various parts of the world but had no real idea of what to expect on our trip to Tanzania. We had planned this trip to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary and believed it would be an “once-in-a-lifetime” type trip. As the trip got closer and closer, our expectations and excitement continued to grow.

I am glad to report that from the moment we stepped off the plane in Kilimanjaro and met Salma from ADS, every expectation we had was surpassed by the ADS Staff and our experiences. On Day 1, we flew to Seronera and met our guide. He was easy going, knowledgeable and by the end of the afternoon, we felt like we’d known him for years. Within 10 minutes of leaving the airport strip, we were in the middle of a herd of 15+ elephants and 15+ hippos. We were stunned by how close we were to the animals and their care-free, natural behavior even though we were just feet away.

Later that evening, after we finished our day (having seen much more after the elephants and hippos) and were having dinner at the Mbuzi Mawe Tent Camp, we talked about all the testimonial emails from previous clients of ADS and how they all seemed to make sense now. While the trip was expensive, with one day completed, we both agreed it was already worth it. We had six more days of our safari and each one was just as good as Day 1 (if not better). It is still hard to believe that you can get VIP treatment while on safari!

Included are two of the many photos that we took:

1. CHEETAHS WITH KILL; while we were in the Ndutu area, we came across 4 cheetahs. We watch and followed them as they stalked, hunted and finally killed a wildebeest. After the kill, we were within feet of them as they took turns eating and resting.

2. LION WITH KILL; again in the Ndutu area, we came across a female lion with her 3 cubs. We watch and followed as she hunted down a baby wildebeest and took it back to her cubs.

Again, thank you for a great experience. We will recommend you to all who will ask!!

Sincerely,

Bill and Sarah Vieth

February – The Calving Season

It’s been a rather dry February this year and the migration appears to have split up into smaller herds and are currently scattered throughout the woodlands but in the past week, the rains have started again over some areas of the southern and eastern Serengeti creating swathes of green and calling the herds back out onto the plains.

Yesterday a decent size herd was located grazing at the southern base of Naabi Hill and stretching towards the Gol Kopjes. The herds we came across were almost exclusively made up of males and I am guessing that the females with their newborn calves are staying in the far south near Maswa and Matiti.

Gol Kopjes is still quite dry and dusty but didn’t disappoint for cats. ADS favourite pride, the Gol Kopje pride, is thriving and we came across a lioness babysitting six cubs from two different litters, all taking refuge from the hot midday sun under a large rock. Several cheetahs were also easily spotted yesterday in the Gol during a short game during midday.

Up in the Seronera, not a single wildebeest to be seen anywhere but plenty of zebra herds around Seronera River and impalas throughout the woodlands to the benefit of the large Seronera predators. During a morning game drive on Sunday, a leopard and her cub were spotted feeding on an impala kill and also a lioness with a fresh zebra kill just south of Maasai Kopjes.

In the far eastern plains around the Gol Mountains, it was green but fairly dusty and small herds of wildebeest with very young calves were spotted along Angata Kiti.We came across several wildebeest and zebra carcasses and I had hoped to spot the wild dog pack that frequent the area but no luck on this trip.I received a call this evening from an ADS camp crew member that the wild dog pack that I had been searching for was spotted in Piaya today by a Maasai, just north of where we had camped. Although I missed them on this safari, its great to know that they are there and thriving.

The wildebeest calving begun in earnest during the the second week of February this year though we are still seeing scattered births over wide parts of the southern and eastern Serengeti. We have had quite a few lucky clients last week out on their african safaris get some really great shots of baby wildebeest being born and even a couple gazelle births, as well, which are arguably even more precious!

Quote of the Week: Jim Childress and Barbara Payne

From the dramatic migration of the wildebeests and zebras, to a cheetah running down a Thomson’s Gazelle, a leopard high in an acacia tree with her cub, a herd of topis chasing a caracal into a kopje, and an amazing natural parade of the grazers and predators of the Serengeti, our trip was fabulous. With our guide’s help, particularly with his willingness to make it a priority, we were also able to identify 240 species of birds. He taught us to say, “ndege tu”, so that when other guides would ask what we were looking at, we could say “only birds” in Swahili.

ADS did a great job of both making it easy for us to negotiate the details of travel in Tanzania and of delivering a trip that was personalized to our tastes. The private luxury camping was a highlight, and the sound of three lions roaring through the night all around our campsite is something we will not soon forget.

Quote of the Week: Deyanne & Bill Nesh

Well, unfortunately, we’re back in the States and have adjusted to the time change.  I say ‘unfortunately’ because we had such a wonderful time on our safari that we didn’t want it to end.  Prior to booking this trip, I had done all my research (for months) and decided to use Africa Dream Safaris.  Three of my friends also wanted to join us on this trip.  They put down their money on my say so alone.  I did feel a little pressure.  I read all the testimonials sent before our safari and loved them.  But they almost sounded too good to be true.  I was only hoping that our trip would be half as good as all the ones I was reading about.  Well, I needn’t have worried.

This was one of the most amazing trips we had been on.  And I don’t say that lightly, as we have done some extensive travel to many remote areas of the world.  I feel like I’m just repeating what all the other testimonials have said before, but it’s all true.  Our guide was incredible.  We saw the big five plus more animals than I can name.  Just when we thought there was nothing left to see, there was.  Every day brought a new experiences, new animals, new adventures!

In the Crater, our guide kept us away from all the other jeeps, while still finding all the animals.  We were the only jeep on the road, when two Black Rhinos crossed the road right in front of us!  We saw a pride of lions, cubs, single male lions, the elusive leopard, cheetahs so close you could touch them (but, of course, we didn’t), baboons everywhere, serval cats, hyenas coming out of their den with babies.  The list goes on and on.

Besides all the animals, our guide took great care of us, doing everything he could to make our trip the trip of a lifetime.  A highlight for me was the Private Luxury Camp.  The crew there was sensational!  We loved hearing the lions and hyenas at night as we slept in our tents, to say nothing of being woken up with a fresh cup of hot tea and coffee in bed.  The food was incredible and we loved the entire experience.  The entire trip, start to finish, was better than we ever could have hoped for.

I can’t thank you and your entire staff for giving us such wonderful memories!  You know without a doubt the trip was incredible when our three friends, who came on this safari with us, are talking about going on another safari with other interested people, and, of course, using Africa Dream Safaris.  Why mess with perfection!  Our sincere thank you to everyone who made our trip a dream come true!

A 12 Day Safari in the Green Season

To Africa Dream Safaris:

What a wonderful trip of a lifetime your company made possible for us!  We headed to the Serengeti Ecosystem in January of this year for 12 days.  From the moment we met the staff in the airport at Mount Kilimanjaro and on the ground in the Serengeti, we were cared for, entertained and educated.

Our guide was not only an incredible source of information on all the animals and habitats but would hold his own in car rallys! He was fearless on some of the worst ‘roads’; could spot wildlife hundreds of meters away; and cheerfully put up with our misnaming of the wildlife and him!  He gave us many experiences to share with our friends and family at home – especially the 4 flat tires in one day! Even through all that he calmly made sure we were cared for and went about taking care of getting us back on the road.

We stayed in the most wonderfully unique accommodations – tented camps to lodges with the comfort of home, but a bit more excitement when lions are roaring outside and zebra’s grazing on the grounds.

Would we recommend ADS? Absolutely and we already have!  When we show our pictures we inspire another potential customer!

Sincerely,

Quote of the Week: Jake and Katie Schneider

We had a wonderful time on our Safari. Everyone involved with ADS was very helpful and attentive. The camps we stayed in were spectacular. While the permanent tented camp at Mbuzi Mawe was spectacular, we especially enjoyed the Lemala mobile tented camps we stayed in which were comfortable and unspoiled. The Lemala staff went out of their way to insure we had everything we could possibly need. We met likeminded people from all over the world at our common dinner table each night. The opportunity to discuss the day’s safari adventures as well as world events was one of many special surprises.

Our driver was very experienced and was also a very interesting and informative man. He knew almost everything about the wildlife we saw and was extremely accommodating to our every request. Our ample boxed breakfasts and lunches were enjoyed each day in some of the most beautiful spots we had ever seen.

We chose to awake every morning at 5:30am so that we could witness the beautiful Serengeti sunrise each day. The morning was always full of surprises with great amounts of animal activity. All our expectations were met as far as the quantity and variety of the wildlife we saw. We very much wanted to see a wildebeest calf being born and, after only one failed attempt, the next morning we were rewarded with an viewing experience we will always remember. That little calf and his mother were both up and walking with the herd in only 5 minutes time. Amazing!

Thanks to everyone at ADS for setting up this wonderful trip which we will long cherish and remember.

Quote of the Week: Subhash and Vera A.

We have been back from our safari for a few days now, and are still very excited with the incredible adventure we had in Tanzania. The trip was much more than we had anticipated, in great part because of your planning and attention to details. Everything worked exactly as you told us it would, from the VIP treatment we received on arrival at Kilimanjaro to the last day when we were dropped back there for the flight home. The local staff was efficient and cordial, and the lodges were excellent, especially the Lake Masek Tented Lodge and the Manor at Ngorongoro. Our guide was absolutely the best. We were very impressed with his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region, and his enthusiasm was contagious and kept us on the edge of our seats. He was also very attentive to our needs and made sure that we were safe and comfortable the whole time.

Tanzania and its parks were absolutely wondrous – we had an incredible number of animal sightings, a vision of the Serengeti in bloom, a memorable visit with a Masai family and a very informative trip to Olduvai, where an assistant took us down to the gorge and showed us the site where the hominid fossils were found. We also had a chance to visit FAME and were impressed with the work being done there – a good cause for ADS to sponsor.

Once again, we thank you for helping us with this trip – it was a very unique adventure and it will stay with us for a very long time. We have actually already recommended ADS to friends who are in the planning stages of a safari trip. Best regards and ‘asante sana.’

Rare African Wild Dogs Spotted

Janet and I just returned from our Safari a couple of weeks ago and we would both like to thank not only you but your organization for what was nothing short of a lifetime experience. From the time we stepped off the plane until we left two weeks later the staff and personnel were right there for us every step of the way. They ensured we had enough food and drink and that all accommodations were properly prepared. The different types of tented camps you recommended were spot on. We especially loved the classic camping and recommend that to anyone, especially where we camped right on the plains. The spectacular view of the migration was right out of a movie.

We cannot say enough about our guide. He was so knowledgeable and always went out of his way to ensure we were well looked after. From the very first day he showed us things we never thought imaginable and we even saw some rare sightings of wild dogs along with enough cheetahs and lions to keep us happy for years. He also taught us a lot about the people and the way they lived, something Janet was especially grateful for learning. If there is ever a person who deserves special recognition it would be him. We would strongly recommend him for any raise if that is possible.

Again thank you for setting us up on this most memorable trip and we both look forward to the next time.

Quote of the Week: Jim and Sandra Moran

You’ve read or heard it all before: ‘The trip was amazing,’ ‘It far exceeded my expectations,’ ‘It was the trip of a lifetime.’ For us, it was all that and more. We never really expected that we would enjoy our safari as much as we did. The worry that it might be like a big open zoo or that it would become monotonous were so far from what the reality was. We’ve been home for a few months now and we can’t stop looking at our photographs and wish that we were back in Tanzania – so much so that we are in the process of booking a return trip to the Serengeti with Africa Dream Safaris.

Africa Dream Safaris takes care of everything. Their incredibly friendly and knowledgeable office staff helped us put together an amazing itinerary and kept in frequent contact with us prior to the safari to provide useful information on what to pack and what to expect. Upon arrival in Tanzania, ADS did everything they stated they would. We were met at the airport, taken to our hotel, picked up the next morning for our flight to the Serengeti, and so on. Their friendly staff in Tanzania was there every step of the way. There were no worries about our contact not showing up or being late.

Then there was our guide. His knowledge of the animals and their behavior, and his enthusiasm and sense of humor made the safari an exceptional experience. It was like he could anticipate where the animals would be and he seemed to always position our vehicle in just the right place for viewing. He could spot animals while driving, where it would take us minutes to spot the animal while using binoculars.

Within minutes of starting our first game drive, we saw our first animals – the amusing warthogs. Within an hour, we saw a large pride of lions. Each day we thought that it couldn’t get any better, but it did. By the end of our 8-day safari, we had seen every animal that we could have expected to see.

We thank every one of the ADS staff that helped make this such a wonderful safari. I would highly recommend Africa Dream Safaris to anyone who wants an exciting, professionally designed, worry-free safari.
